Woman Sleeping in ENO Underquilt Hammock

Eagles Nest Outfitters Vulcan Underquilt

You’ve heard of four season sleeping bags… but what about four season hammocking? This is an underquilt that you can use to line the bottom of your hammock and thereby reduce ventilation and cold air coming from underneath. The end product is a hammock that is much warmer and that is suitable for use in the winter.

What Makes it Different

Eagles Nest is a great brand that is a favorite among hammock campers (check our review of one of their hammocks, here). As well as hammocks, the company also makes a number of different items that hammock users will likely find very useful and that can improve your experience of relaxing and unwinding between the trees.

Man Sleeping in ENO Underquilt Hammock

This is a perfect example: the Eagles Nest Outfitters Vulcan Underquilt which you use to line the inside of your hammock. This makes for a much warmer night’s sleep because it prevents cool air from reaching you from underneath.

This is a particularly useful product if your hammock uses a loosely woven fabric that is therefore very breathable but it’s also ideal for anyone who just likes the idea of sleeping in cooler climates.

And there’s something very romantic and appealing about that idea: imagine being able to look up at the stars on a completely crisp and clear night with cool air all around you, while being perfectly warm and safe inside your nice hammock-with-underquilt!

Features/Benefits

This underquilt is able to keep the cold out and provide warmth of around 30-40F. This will make a big difference and is possible thanks to a construction that uses both fine and ultrafine denier continuous filament fibers. These create tiny airpockets that naturally form between the fibers and thereby trap the body heat in and keep the cold out.

Extrafine ENO Underquilt Fiber

Meanwhile, the quilt uses a differentially cut construction, which is able to contour to the shape of the body. This is a smart design that – for example – uses an inner shell that’s closer to the body that the outer shell. It is water repellent too, in case it rains and is generally the ultimate solution for hammock camping in the cold. Dimensions are 80’’ x 48’’.

Potential Drawbacks

The big question: does it fold? And the answer is: of course! This underquilt is an ultralight hiker/camper’s friend thanks to its ability to roll to a size of just 14’’ x 7’’ and fit into any rucksack.

It’s actually only 30 ounces too and of course it is versatile enough to be used outside the hammock or in other circumstances when you’re at a loss. Of course you’d need to add a canopy to really be safe from the rain, however!

Conclusion

Customer reviews love this hammock, with 47 customers scoring it 4.5 stars on Amazon.
